Swimming Pool Strahov

Vaníčkova 100/6, 169 00 Praha 6-Břevnov

Strahov swimming pool is a 25m indoor pool, situated in the eastern grandstand of the Great Strahov Stadium. The Great Strahov Stadium was originally built as a venue for popular Sokol displays of synchronized gymnastics in 1926; it was a sand pitch training ground with clay walls and wooden grandstands. The whole complex was completed from 1960 – 1975 for the needs of national Spartakiads, covering a spectacular 63,000 m2 with a capacity of 280,000, which included 96,000 seats. Due to its size, the stadium is, according to some sources, cited as the largest stadium in the world and the second largest building developed for sporting purposes. On 6.3.2003, the property was declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture. In 1977 a swimming pool was built underneath the eastern grandstand during its reconstruction in the 1970s. Today, this 25m indoor swimming pool with six swimming lanes is used by swimmers from the University Sports Centre of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, as well as various swimming clubs, for swimming lessons, and by universities and secondary schools for their physical education lessons. Public swimming is allowed during allocated hours.
